Electronic Wasteland

A city in China has become a wasteland for modern electronic trash.

Where do the millions of computer monitors, cell phones and other electronic refuse our society generates end up? Some of it is shipped illegally from the U.S. to China where it is harming the environment and the people who salvage its valuable components, reports 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley. On the heels of a recent GAO Report chastising the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for failing to prevent improper disposal of e-waste and exposing the depraved business practices of 43 U.S. recyclers, it is increasingly clear that many businesses that outsource e-waste disposal are not aware that their electronics are being mismanaged by the outsourcers they choose. E-Stewards Certified Recyclers including Redemtech are prohibited from exporting toxic electronic waste to developing countries.
